Sergey Prokofiev Piano Sonata #7
Сергей Прокофьев Соната №7 для фортепиано
Prokofiev’s Seventh Sonata - one of the “war” piano sonatas (#6-7-8) - was finished in 1942, the pivoting year of World War II, the Stalingrad battle... Its premiere in 1943 was received with similar enthusiasm as Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony. It reflected everything that Russian people felt and lived through at that moment, evoking strong patriotic feelings.
First movement depicts the ugly face of fascism, a cruel invasion of the enemy. It throws us immediately into chaos and devastation of war. Language is dry and tense: firm rhythmic construction, chromatic dissonant harmonic nature, graphic melodic lines contrasting with lyrical episodes that sound quite frozen and fragile, as a reaction of human souls to evil force. At the beginning, a row of Baroque crosses, linked together, clearly represents swastika, the motive that will appear throughout the entire movement.
Second movement tells about people’s life, their love and faith, their survival in chaos and their colossal efforts – physical and spiritual – to confront it. Going from a mother’s lullaby to the bells – tragic and calling voice of Motherland, this music glorifies beauty and humanity of people’s spirit.
The Finale, known as “tank attack”, is a fight for existence, for the loved ones, for faith and for Motherland that lost in this devastating war 27 million people... The uneven 7/8 meter, toccata-like texture, uninterrupted rhythm throughout the movement reminds the Russian dance “pliasovaia” that becomes stronger as it goes and creates an image of a giant powerful force of tremendous resistance and will that sweeps everything on its path stating the total and unconditional victory.

On April 22-24, a significant event took place in Moscow - the II International Scientific Conference "Musicology: Art. Culture. Education”, organized by the Institute “Maimonides Academy”. I had a chance to participate as an independent researcher in this large-scale conference, which brought together musicians, art historians, philologists from different parts of Russia and the world.
Here is my video presentation -
"The Art of Interpretation: Artistic Analysis of the Piano Concerto No. 2
op. 16 (in G Minor) by Sergey Prokofiev."
P.S. As part of the conference, the International Competition of Musicians-Performers "Classical Academy" was held for Prokofiev’s 130th Anniversary.
Thank you, jury, for your high appreciation!
P.S. К 130-летнему Юбилею Сергея Прокофьева в
рамках конференции прошёл Международный конкурс музыкантов-исполнителей«Классическая академия».
Спасибо жюри за
высокую оценку!
This year we celebrate Sergey Prokofiev’s 130th Anniversary!
Philippe Mathis first worked as pianist in Paris and for a famous agency in Geneva. He used to play during ten years mainly jazz and international music in Europe, Monaco and Asia.
Even after he left the music business, he always enjoyed writing his compositions. One of his goal is not only to write music for piano but the also music that the pianist would enjoy performing.
His piano compositions have received several international awards in competition. Most of them are written for solo piano and can be played live. You can download on the site the pdf scores of these main compositions and also listen to his music.
So when a lucky coincidence reacquainted our families after nearly 50 years, we traded musical discoveries, his accomplished compositions and Svetlana's performances and Antoine's music.
And kindly he proposed to include Antoine in the news on his website.
Merci!
Now it is your turn to enjoy Philippe's compositions here
